St Thomas Library re-opens for business
St Thomas Library re-opens for businessPosted on: 8 February 2012
Devon County Council’s library in St Thomas official re-opened for business on Monday 6 February.
Residents got a sneak peak of how ‘The Old Stationers’ has been transformed into a library before it opened at a special event on Saturday 4 February, and were delighted with the results.
The new self-service kiosks are making borrowing items much quicker and easier as people can check their own items in and out of the library, saving them time as they don’t have to queue at the main desk. Staff are on hand to show people how to use the new facilities, which also mean they will have more opportunity to help people with their choices, rather than having to spend lots of time issuing items.
The former shop, which has remained empty for almost a decade, has undergone refurbishment over the past couple of months, including the removal of redundant shop fixtures and fittings and the installation of the necessary cabling for computer, telephone and new self service facilities. Heating has been put in and essential rewiring has been done, along with other work so the building meets the fire regulations and is a safe and suitable environment for residents and staff. All this has been topped off with the final touches of a fresh lick of paint, new carpet, and plenty of shelves stocked with a good range of books, DVDs and audiobooks.
Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for libraries, said:
“A lot of hard work has gone into getting this facility open as quickly as possible, and I am delighted with the results.
“The building has undergone an impressive transformation, and the library is light, spacious and very welcoming. I am certain that residents will enjoy making good use of it.”
