A361 resurfacing scheme ahead of schedule
Posted on: 8 February 2018
A resurfacing scheme on the A361 near Tiverton is ahead of schedule and work is expected to switch carriageways overnight on Sunday (11 February).
Devon County Council has confirmed that work on the westbound carriageway of the North Devon Link Road, which has been closed in recent weeks, is nearing completion.
From around 8pm on Sunday, the eastbound carriageway of the A361 near Gornhay Cross will close one lane at a time to allow the contraflow system to be switched to the newly surfaced westbound carriageway. A signed diversion route will be in place while this change is implemented.
This closure replaces the original date of Sunday 4 March which was scheduled for changing over the contraflow, but will now no longer be needed.
From Monday morning (12 February) the westbound carriageway will be opened with traffic using a contraflow system while resurfacing takes place on the eastbound carriageway.
During this phase, which is expected to take around five weeks, Gornhay junction will be closed to eastbound traffic. A signed diversion will be in place with motorists travelling towards the M5 being diverted via Bollham roundabout.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “The scheme is progressing well and it’s encouraging that the initial phase of resurfacing is being completed ahead of schedule. These are major improvements on this route so I would ask road users to please bear with us while this work is carried out.”
Councillor Colin Slade, Devon County Councillor for Tiverton East, said: “I am very pleased that the work is going so well, and the work done so far looks very good. I use this stretch of the A361 daily, and I know how frustrating it can be for drivers at peak times, but it looks like the works will be completed ahead of schedule which is good news for everyone.”
The work is weather dependant and may have be postponed at short notice. If it is delayed by weather, the switching of the contraflow will be undertaken as soon as possible after the planned date.
The Devon County Council scheme, being carried out by Alun Griffiths Contracting Ltd, is part of a £5 million upgrade of 10km of the North Devon Link Road’s surface and drainage from Bolham roundabout to the east of Gornhay Junction
The work, funded with Challenge Funding, includes a smoother surface material being added to the new junction currently being constructed to access developments to the east of Tiverton.
