An amble not a ramble: the memory café walking group
Posted on: 18 May 2016
A new partnership in Honiton is helping people with dementia enjoy a fun and healthy leisure activity.
The Honiton Dementia Action Alliance is working to make Honiton a Dementia Friendly Town. After sending out a questionnaire to local people living with dementia and their carers, they discovered that 90% of the respondents wanted to be able to continue walking as a leisure activity.
Determined to make this happen, the Alliance’s Memory Café teamed up with the local Walking for Health group, a nationwide initiative, co-ordinated from Honiton Leisure Centre. The two groups formed a mutual partnership that has led to the development of a monthly ‘Amble not a Ramble’ walking group.
“All of our activities are dementia friendly, but inclusive for all who would like to join in.”
Volunteers from the Memory Café have been trained as walk leaders, and the walk leaders from Walking for Health received Dementia Friends training. The walking group was officially launched in April 2016, along with a published programme of the walks which are open to anyone who would like to join.
The walking group meets on the second Thursday of each month. Find out more by visiting their website.
