Buy With Confidence helps sponsor The Great Big Rhino Project

Posted on: 24 August 2016

A Devon businesswoman has won a competition to name a life-sized rhino, which is standing outside Exeter Central Train Station for the next two months.

Karen Bryant of Select Appliances in Plymouth submitted the name ‘Paladin’ as part of a contest held by Devon & Somerset Trading Standards Service and the Buy With PaladinConfidence Trader Approval scheme.

Devon & Somerset Trading Standards Service’s Buy With Confidence (BWC) scheme is sponsoring Paladin as part of Paignton Zoo’s Great Big Rhino Project.

In total 42 life-sized painted rhino sculptures can be seen around Exeter and the English Riviera, where they will stand until October 9.

Then they will be on display at Paignton Zoo from October 14 to October 16, before being auctioned for charity on November 3.

The money raised will go towards conservation projects to help save the endangered Javan and Sumatran Rhinos.

Karen explained that she came up with the name Paladin, which  means ‘defender of a noble cause’, because The Great Big Rhino Project  was helping  protect rhinos in the wild, while the BWC scheme sets out to protect consumers from rogue traders.

She added: “I passionately believe in the BWC ethos. I find it frustrating that despite all the publicity about rogue traders that customers still get duped and ripped off. We are a trusting society and when looking for the name I wanted a name that stood for the values of BWC and eventually came across Paladin. It sounded like a strong name and sounded perfect for a rhinoceros!”

Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Trading Standards said: “I am delighted that Buy With Confidence is supporting such a worthwhile project and I hope that as many people as possible can come along and see Paladin is outside Exeter Central Station from now until October 9”.

Councillor David Hall, Somerset County Council’s Deputy Leader, responsible for Trading Standards, said: “I welcome the fact that the Buy With Confidence Scheme is sponsoring a rhino. It helps raise awareness of a scheme that provides local consumers with some assurance that they are dealing with a business they can trust.”

Buy With Confidence is an independent, not for profit, national register of Trading Standards Approved businesses. All businesses are vetted and approved by Trading Standards to ensure customers receive a high quality service.
