Can you find suitable childcare that meets your needs?

Posted on: 17 August 2017

We’re asking parents of pre-school age children to let us know if they can’t find suitable childcare.

We’re asking for a couple of reasons. We want to help parents, so that they can arrange the childcare hours they need; and because we want to know where there’s not enough provision to meet demand.

It’s especially relevant now, as early years and childcare providers are preparing to accommodate greater numbers of young children from September.

Councillor James McInnes, Cabinet Member with responsibility for children’s services

The Government is doubling the entitlement to funded childcare for three and four years olds with working parents from September, from 15 hours per week to 30 hours a week during term times. The entitlement can be taken as fewer hours over more weeks.

We’ve asked early years providers in Devon whether they’re ready, and the vast majority tell us that they are and that they’re able to offer the extended entitlement.

The new entitlement will increase the demand for places within the sector, which is why we want to know where there’s pressure already.

So if you’re having difficulty in identifying an available nursery or childminder, or you’re struggling to find childcare at the times you need it, please let us know and we’ll try to help. Please complete this form

And we’re also encouraging people to consider careers in early years settings. It’s a really important area of work, hugely worthwhile and of enormous benefit to young children in preparation for their school education. And there are a range of opportunities for progression which makes it a very rewarding career. Please visit our website for more information.
