The leader of Devon County Council, John Hart, said: “It’s a remarkable achievement to do the double of European and domestic champions just a decade after joining the top division of English rugby and a tribute to the vision of Tony Rowe and Rob Baxter.

“They are just the fourth English team to do the double which is a real mark of the feat they have achieved.

“And what makes it even better is that the team are rooted in Devon from Tony Rowe in east Devon and Rob Baxter outside Exeter through to Joe and Sam Simmonds from Teignmouth and man of the match Henry Slade from the South Hams.

“It was a tense game played in appalling conditions but Saturday’s victory crowns a truly glittering season.

“At a time when we are all beset by Covid-19, their success has been one of the few, true high spots of the year and I want to congratulate everyone associated with the club.”
