Devon County Council is encouraging residents to #BackTheFuture with £40k for climate related projects

Devon County Council has teamed up with Crowdfunder to support Devon-based projects helping to tackle the climate emergency in the county.
The Council has made £40,000 funding available through the #BackTheFuture initiative, which will help individuals, community groups and organisations to make their planet-positive ideas a reality.
Last week saw the successful #BackTheFuture Live: Devon Climate Challenge event take place, where three incredible community projects competed for a share of £10,000 funding. The three projects took on a unique 24-hour crowdfunding challenge before presenting their ideas to a special panel of judges during the live-streamed event.
After a series of questions and a discussion between the panel, the judges awarded Sustainable Tiverton first place and £5,000 to help them create a sustainability hub to support members of the community to take action against the climate emergency. The Earth Repair Shop in Ilfracombe, was awarded second place, and £3,000, for their volunteer-run project that aims to support local people to live more sustainably. And the Greenway Project received £2,000 towards their idea to create a traffic free, accessible, multi-use trail from Chagford to Moretonhampstead.
That wasn’t all though, during the event it was also announced that the Council were making a further £30,000 match funding available to help others make their green idea a reality.
Residents are encouraged to submit their ideas by Thursday 29 July at 7.00pm, after which, ten successful projects will be chosen to receive specialist support to crowdfund their idea and get a share of the match funding from Devon County Council.
Crowdfunder is a powerful online fundraising tool that allows projects to coordinate activity in one place as well as raise awareness within their local community and even further afield. The three projects that took part in the live event have already almost doubled the £10,000 contribution from Devon County Council, with an additional £9,600 being raised from the ‘wider crowd’.
If you need some inspiration for your crowdfunding idea, a recording of the #BackTheFuture live event is available on YouTube.
Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Climate Change and the Environment, and one of the judges of the live event, said:
“I want to say a big congratulations to all three of the projects that took part in the climate challenge event last week. It was great to hear you speak so passionately about your ideas and showcase how community groups can play an important part in helping tackle the climate emergency in Devon.
“It’s vital that we all continue to work together on this, and I’m pleased that we have made a further £30k match funding available to support our climate conscious Devon communities to make a difference. All you need to do is visit the Crowdfunder website and tell us about your idea!”

“What a night! It was amazing to hear so many people talk about their efforts to tackle the climate emergency.
“Crowdfunder launched #BackTheFuture to make sure amazing people and planet positive ideas had a place to raise funds and build a community – and the #BackTheFuture LIVE events are amazing examples of that at work.
“With £5,000 in match funding on offer and the crowd behind you, we’re excited to see more inspiring people on Crowdfunder, positively impacting climate change.”
