“I am sure colleagues from all political parties and every corner of the county will send our best wishes for success to Exeter Chiefs and Exeter City this weekend.
“It’s highly unusual for two games so crucial to fans of both football and rugby in Devon to fall so close together and I imagine there will be a real exodus to Twickenham and Wembley this weekend.
“Both the leader of the council and I were fortunate to see Chiefs’ last gasp victory over Saracens on Saturday and colleagues tell me that City’s injury time win over Carlisle was just as exciting.
“For me, Henry Slade`s penalty kick to the corner flag was one of the best kicks I have ever seen. And – in the dying seconds of the game – the Chiefs winning the line out and the scrum pushing over to score was absolutely phenomenal.
“Let’s hope that this weekend’s games against Blackpool and Wasps are just as exciting but – more importantly – end with the right results and that’s Chiefs crowned as Premiership Champions and Exeter in League One.”
