Drab to fab furniture for Devon Upcycling Day

Posted on: 13 June 2018

Repairing, refurbishing and repurposing skills will be celebrated in Devon next week as part of ‘Devon Upcycling Day’ (Friday 22 June).

Devon residents are being encouraged to find out how to give the things they no longer want a new lease of life, and think differently about what they buy and throw away.

ReFurnish stores in Totnes and Crediton and The ReStore in Dartington are hosting exciting ‘upcycling workshops’ where professional up-cycler Lynne Saunders (of Pepperwhite Vintage in Exeter), will be on hand to guide people through the process of how to upcycle furniture and answer any questions.

The workshops are free and no booking is required, just turn up at Totnes ReFurnish between 10am and 12 noon and Crediton ReFurnish between 2pm and 4pm on Friday 22 June or Dartington ReStore between 1pm and 3pm on Sunday 24 June. There will be items to practice on and materials supplied.

Keen up-cyclers are also in with the chance to win a basket full of upcycling goodies and one of two £30 vouchers (one for under 18s and one for over 18s) from Chagford based community re-use centre ‘Proper Job’. Competition entries for the best upcycling project in Devon are to be made by uploading before and after pictures to the Recycle Devon Facebook page.

Councillor Andrea Davis, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member Infrastructure, Cllr Andrea DavisDevelopment and Waste said:

“Devon Upcycling Day is about encouraging residents to think before they get rid of something and hopefully inspire them to find out how to breathe new life back into furniture and other household items that they may have otherwise thrown away.

“Up-cycling furniture or buying reused furniture reduces waste, conserve valuable resources and ultimately contributes to minimising waste and our impact on the environment. It’s unique, stylish and great value for money too!

“If you’re interested in trying upcycling for the first time, learning something new or improving your skills, or just looking for some inspiration, pop along to one of the workshops.

“And don’t forget to enter your fabulous up-cycling projects into the competition!”
