Stover Country Park and the Grand Western Canal Country Park have both been awarded Green Flag Awards during this year’s Love Parks Week.

Stover, which is currently marking its 40th anniversary year, has now received the prestigious Green Flag Award for the past 16 years.

This international award, which is into its third decade, recognises the best green spaces in the world and is the mark of a quality park.

The Green Flag Award is a sign to the public that both of Devon County Council’s Country Parks offer the highest possible environmental standards, are beautifully maintained and provide excellent visitor facilities.

Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council Cabinet Member with responsibility for Environment, said: “Everyone at Stover is absolutely delighted to receive a Green Flag Award in the Park’s 40th anniversary year – and it’s the 16th year now that the Country Park has been awarded this status. The Green Flag Award is recognition for the hard work and commitment that goes into maintaining more than 114 acres at Stover that make it such an important site for our local environment and a valued habitat for a variety of wildlife.

“The Grand Western Canal Country Park is one of Devon’s jewels and rightly deserves this accolade. Everyone connected with the Canal Country Park should be extremely proud that their efforts have been recognised with this prestigious Green Flag Awards Scheme. It takes a huge commitment to maintain the Park to the high standards needed to receive this award for 11 years in a row.”

The Green Flag Award follows Stover Country Park’s recent designation by the British Dragonfly Society as one of only 14 “Dragonfly Hotspots” in Britain.

Councillor George Gribble, Devon County Councillor for Bovey Tracey Rural, said: “We would like to say a huge ‘thank you’ to the many volunteers who work throughout the year with the Park Rangers to help to keep Stover well managed and maintained for visitors to enjoy. This Green Flag Award is a great reward for all their hard work and efforts. Stover Park Rangers recently organised a BBQ for volunteers, including Mayfields School, to celebrate the success.”

It’s the 11th consecutive year that the Grand Western Canal Country Park has received the honour from the Green Flag Awards Scheme.

The TripAdvisor Certificate celebrates attractions with consistently high reviews on TripAdvisor over the past year which have continually delivered a quality customer experience.

Councillor Colin Slade, local County Councillor for Tiverton east, said: “The Grand Western Canal Country Park plays many roles. It is a visitor attraction, supports several local businesses and is a favourite with dog walkers, cyclists and those who simply like to enjoy its peaceful surroundings and wonderful views. This new award is certainly justified and a just reward for all the hard work put in by the Canal Rangers and volunteers.”

Councillor Ray Radford, local County Councillor for Willand and Uffculme, said: “This is great news yet again for our canal, and credit has to go to all of the staff and, of course, all of the volunteers involved. The Grand Western Canal is a major attraction for visitors to the Tiverton area as well as for Mid Devon, and it brings in very welcome revenue. The Green Flag Award does not come lightly, it has to be earned. Well done and keep up the good work.”

International Green Flag Award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “It’s fantastic that we have more Green Flag Awards in the UK than ever before, joined this year by 131 International winners. Each flag honours the thousands of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award. We congratulate each and every winner on their fantastic achievement.”
