Last call for canal photo competition

Posted on: 9 November 2015

Time is running if you want to enter the 2015 canal photo competition.

Since February budding photographers have been clicking away and submitting their favourite snaps for this year’s competition.
The competition has been organised by Devon County Council’s Canal Ranger Service, and the deadline for entries is midnight on Monday 30th November.

So far the team has received hundreds of entries featuring photos taken at the Grand Western Canal Country Park. They range from the horse drawn barge, wildflowers, wildlife and people enjoying the canal’s natural beauty.

Now it’s autumn, with the countryside resplendent in an array of different colours and shades. With just a few more weeks left before the deadline, there is a final chance to submit pictures showing off the season’s unique beauty.
Local Council Member for Tiverton East, Des Hannon and for Willand and Uffclume, Ray Radford are contributing towards the prizes through their locality budgets.
Councillor Des Hannon said: “With the turning leaves and brooding skies, now is a fantastic time to take some characterful pictures.
“I would personally quite like to see more pictures of our historic structures such as the beautiful curved bridges in the area and the recently restored embankment at Halberton.
“So get on your weather gear and get out there and start taking some pictures!”
Councillor Radford, who is also Mid Devon District Council’s member for Halberton, said: “I understand from the Canal Rangers that they have had some very good entries – particularly in the Canal Landscapes and Canal Wildlife categories.
“It would be great to see some more photos of visitors enjoying the canal – either on the towpath or the water.”
Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Community and Environmental Services, said: “The combination of the canal and a countryside full of reds, oranges, yellows and browns means there’s no better time to go for a walk with your camera or phone.
“It doesn’t matter if you are an experienced photographer or not, if you capture a nice image, please send it in, we want to see it.”
Entries will be divided into three categories: Canal Landscapes, Canal Activities and Canal Wildlife. The competition is being sponsored by PhotoLesk – the photography & print studio on Gold Street, Tiverton.
Within each category the winner will received a £100 PhotoLesk voucher and the runner-up will receive a £50 PhotoLesk voucher.
Judging will be undertaken by two professional photographers and a member of the Tiverton and Heathcoat Photographic Society. Winners will be announced in mid December.
