Plan it, freeze it, compost it – three ways to save on food waste

A keen recycler from Tavistock has won a hamper full of waste–saving goodies by pledging to throw less food away.
At the Devon County Show Recycle Devon held a prize draw for the chance to win a hamper, which includes items to help save on food waste including vegetable savers, a fridge thermometer, fridge organisers, lolly moulds, cool packs, a spaghetti measurer and measuring spoons,
All residents had to do was to pledge to reduce their food waste. Home composting is the most effective way to reduce waste as at least 30% of the contents in an average household bin can be composted and meal planning is another.
The draw aimed to inspire more people to either compost food or garden waste at home, or make use of their food waste collection in areas where they have one.
The winner of the hamper is Sarah Mear who was presented with the hamper by Debo Sellis, the Devon County Councillor for Tavistock and Gulworthy.
Sarah said: “I love making lists so I always plan what the we’re going to eat for the week ahead – that way we only shop for what we need.
“If we do get to the end of the week and there are bits and pieces left I’ll either concoct a ‘leftovers’ meal as just about anything will go with pasta and crème fraiche or make soup in and freeze to have later.
“If there’s anything left from our evening meal then either me or my husband will take it for lunch the next day.”
Councillor Debo Sellis said: “It’s great that Sarah has so many inventive ways to reduce food waste. The best way of reducing the amount of food waste is to avoid wasting food in the first place and as Sarah suggests you can do this by planning your meals and before you do your food shopping by checking your cupboards, fridge and freezer.
“It will also save money an average family could save up to £60 per month.”
