Steve Brown, the Director of Public Health Devon (Designate) says that there’s a lot to be optimistic about right now, but that we must not relax our guard.

“We are hearing of significant advances in the COVID-19 vaccine,” he said.

“We’ve got Christmas to look forward to. We know that shortly we’ll be coming out out of the current national restrictions. And we’re also seeing an increase in the number of those fast devices to test us as well.

“So there is an awful lot of things to be optimistic about.

“However, all those things, while they will have a role going forward, will take time, particularly the vaccine.

“We might be coming towards a new chapter, but we cannot relax our guard.

“It’s really important that we adhere to the public health guidance around social distancing, face covering and particularly washing our hands.

“We are seeing, and continue to see, rising case numbers in Devon.

“We are seeing it in working age adults, and we’re starting to see it in the older population as well.

“So while it’s good to be optimistic and to see that in the future there are things that will help us, these things will not happen quickly.”
