Repairs planned for Bray Viaduct in New Year
Posted on: 13 December 2018
Essential repairs will be carried out at Bray Viaduct on the A361, near Barnstaple, early in the New Year.
Overnight work to replace an expansion joint on the structure is due to start on the evening of Wednesday 2 January.
When the scheme gets underway, two-way traffic signals will be in place between 7pm and 6am, five nights a week. Initially, work will start on the Tiverton-bound carriageway, before switching to the Barnstaple-bound side.
The road will be fully open during the daytime. This £400,000 scheme is expected to take around three months to complete.
Some weekend working and night time closures, from 7pm to 6am, will be needed during the scheme. The road will be closed overnight on Monday 7 January, Sunday 10 February and Monday 18 March, and advanced warning will be provided on additional dates. A signed diversion will be in place via Landkey, Swimbridge and Filleigh.
For safety reasons, a 30mph speed limit will be in place across the viaduct, with speed cameras located on the structure to enforce the restriction.
Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council Cabinet Member for Highway Management, said: “The upkeep of Devon’s bridges and structures is absolutely vital. The expansion joint on the viaduct needs replacing as soon as possible and this scheme has been timed to ensure that disruption is kept to a minimum.”
