Safeguarding concerns lifted for Donness Nursing Home

Health and social care commissioners, NEW Devon Clinical Commissioning Group and Devon County Council, have lifted their suspension of placements following a whole service safeguarding review of Donness Nursing Home in Westward Ho!, previously rated ‘inadequate’ by The Care Quality Commission (CQC) who regulate the service.
Significant progress has been made by Vaneal Ltd, the new provider that now operates Donness Nursing Home. Improvements in the quality of care, which address the concerns first raised in June by CQC are evident, say the commissioners.
Devon County Council and CCG safeguarding officers worked with the former care provider and owner of the home, and with the incoming care provider, Vaneal Ltd, to ensure that residents of the home were safe and that their care needs were being met.
An action plan to address CQC’s concerns was quickly put in place, and even prior to the acquisition of the home, Vaneal Ltd appointed its own interim manager, Mrs. Claire Atkinson, to oversee the improvements required.
The commissioners had stopped referring people to the home while there were safeguarding concerns, but the lifting of the safeguarding review now means that referrals to the home can resume.
A spokesman on behalf of the Council said:
“We always try to work with care providers to ensure that residents are kept safe and that their care needs continue to be met. In this case, we were pleased to be working with Vaneal Ltd. Their involvement has kept the home open, so that the current residents can continue to stay living in the home, close to their families in the Bideford area. We and the CQC will continue to monitor the quality of care provided at the home.”
