South West leaders united in call for fair funding

The leaders of county and unitary councils across the South West have united to call for fair funding for hard-pressed rural authorities.
Devon County Council leader John Hart has joined with his fellow leaders from Cornwall, Plymouth, Somerset, Torbay and Dorset to ask the Government for fairer funding for services for the elderly and vulnerable.
Mr Hart said: “I was pleased to join my fellow council leaders from across the South West peninsula in this united front to Government.
“We all face similar problems delivering high quality services in rural areas and we all suffer from unfair funding compared to our colleagues in London, the South East and other metropolitan areas.
“Devon not only suffers from unfair funding in our schools but in health and transport.
“This week I am proposing a budget which will see substantially more spending on our elderly and vulnerable residents, on children’s services and on our roads in order to meet rising demand.
“But we are having to increase council tax to do that which we might not have to do if we received the same Government funding as councils in metropolitan areas.”Posted in: Politics
