A Teignmouth primary school has won a top award for its inclusive teaching which has boosted pupil performance.

Hazeldown Primary School has achieved the highest level possible for the Devon Inclusion Award, giving it specialist status for communication and interaction.

This recognises the way the school’s inclusive teaching meets the needs of all learners as well as pupils with autism and speech and language needs.

The school was subject to a rigorous inspection process by specialist staff from Devon County Council’s school improvement partner, Babcock LDP, before the award was made.

Rose Brooks, who is a specialist advisory teacher for Babcock LDP, presented the award at a whole school assembly on Friday (15 July), where a video produced by the school as part of the award was shown.

She said: “Pupils with autism and speech and language needs make good curriculum progress and there are careful systems in place to ensure their progress and well-being.

“Staff at the school have worked extremely hard over the past few years to achieve such a high standard, which is evident in all classes throughout the school.

“The project has been supported consistently by the special needs lead and senior leaders.

“The improvement in language and communication skills has had a noticeable impact on children’s educational outcomes.”

Headteacher Stuart Ludford said: “I am incredibly proud that we have achieved the highest level of the Devon Inclusion award.

“It is wonderful that the passion and dedication that our staff team put into providing the very best learning experiences for all of our children has been recognised.

“Our core belief is that all children can succeed and achieve great things if we provide the right opportunities and support.

“This has been acknowledged through the assessment process that led to us achieving this award.”

Kirsty Prentice, who is one of the special needs coordinators at Hazeldown, said: “I would like to thank all of the staff team for their incredibly dedicated approach and the effort they put in to supporting the children. We should all be very proud.”

My Granddaughter attends Hazeldown Primary School.
I have been privlidged to be able to pick her up from school in the afternoons, while here on holiday.
The staff were very friendly and I had a very happy little girl greeting me.
Well done Hazeldown. Very proud of you.
