Travel Devon helps another major employer to commute sustainably

Posted on: 7 March 2019

Travel Devon has joined forces with Pennon Group to help staff commute to work in a more sustainable and healthy way.

Pennon, the parent company of South West Water and Viridor with headquarters in Exeter, is the latest business to take advantage of Travel Devon’s travel planning expertise and workplace support service.

Travel Devon, Devon County Council’s travel advice service, supported Pennon during the launch of their Green Travel Month in March.

The campaign is part of Pennon’s commitment to the Year of Green Action. Pennon’s business is about bringing resources to life in a sustainable way and the Year of Green Action is also integral to the company’s new Sustainability Strategy which was introduced 2019.

During a Travel Devon event on Monday 4 March trained travel advisors provided information and resources, enabling Pennon staff to make smarter travel choices, including car sharing, cycling and walking.

Individual Pennon employees were offered a free personal travel plan (PTP), which gives a range of travel options for their commute to and from work and all the information to get them started on their journey.

In addition, people were signposted to free cycle confidence training, a two-hour session helping them to brush up their cycling skills, increase their confidence in riding on roads and receive advice on suitable commuter routes.

The company has also signed up for the Travel Devon Toolkit, an online platform where they can access all the tools they need to start travel planning for their workplace.

This includes a Travel Survey which can help businesses better understand how their workers are travelling to work and what would help them make more sustainable choices in their travel.

Councillor Stuart Hughes

Councillor Stuart Hughes, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Highways Management said: “It’s great when companies like Pennon, with a reputation for sustainability, are helping their staff to travel in a healthier and environmentally friendly way.
“Encouraging more people to walk, cycle and use sustainable transport helps improve people’s health, reduces congestion on the roads and has environmental benefits.”

Ed Mitchell, Director of Environment and Sustainability at Pennon Group, said: “The Year of Green Action is about connecting people with nature, demonstrating the power of collective action and showing how we can all take positive action to improve our environment. Our business is about bringing resources to life in a sustainable way so this initiative is a natural fit with our business and our new Sustainability Strategy. We appreciate the support provided by Travel Devon.”

The Travel Devon workplace support offer is part of Devon County Council’s commitment to sustainable transport and is funded by the Department for Transport through the Access Fund Programme.

The Travel Devon Toolkit is accessible to any business anywhere. Workplaces in Barnstaple, Exeter and Newton Abbot are eligible for business support, grant funding and Travel Devon events to help them implement travel planning measures and encourage employees to make more sustainable and active travel choices.
