Underage Sales Training for businesses
Posted on: 15 July 2016
Retailers in Devon and Somerset are invited to a free training evening to help them avoid the pitfalls of inadvertently selling age-restricted products, like alcohol, to children.
Five events across the two counties are planned over the next few months and they are aimed at helping retailers prevent underage sales.
The events are hosted by Devon and Somerset Trading Standards Service and will provide businesses with guidance and tips.
In the retail sector the training and development of staff can be difficult, especially when large numbers of part-time or temporary staff are employed across many locations and staff turnover is high.
Businesses that sell age restricted products to children can face fines of up to £20,000 and a prison sentence.
Retailers of age-restricted products like liqueur confectionary, DVDs, alcohol and tobacco need to protect their businesses by ensuring they are aware of the law and how best to implement it, avoiding potential penalties for any breach of the legislation.
Councillor Roger Croad, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Trading Standards, said: “The legislation is extensive and quite complicated and the training sessions aim to make the rules understandable to help businesses avoid unwittingly breaking the law.
“The course helps owners, managers and frontline staff better understand how the legislation applies to their businesses and addresses practical issues faced by staff every day.”
Councillor David Hall, the Deputy Leader of Somerset County Council with responsibility for Trading Standards, said: “For retailers, it is important to ensure that this training takes place, is understood and that training records are kept in case of future investigations by Trading Standards Officers.
“This course allows training to be implemented quickly and cost effectively, which is particularly important for temporary/season staff. “
